Honua Kai Villas

Honua (hoe-new-a) Kai (Kie) in Hawaiian means watching the ocean from land. The Honua Kai is located on the #1 beach on Maui and in the world, Ka’anapali Beach. The 46 acre resort was finished in 2009 and 2010 and took four years to build and is worth almost one billion dollars. It is the newest resort on Ka’anapali beach in 30+ years and is a true 5-star resort.
In addition to the finest villas on Maui, Honua Kai is fortunate to have the best Hawaiian restaurant on Maui – Dukes Beach House and it’s ocean front on Honua Kai land. We have eaten at all the finest restaurants on Maui and if you want a true Hawaiian experience Dukes is the best on the island and their prices are VERY affordable – it too is 5-star all the way with a waiting list that is days long.
The Honua Kai has two towers of villas:
- Hokulani Tower – 318 villas
- Konea Tower – 309 villas
Each villa is individually owned by a person/family/trust and I don’t believe anyone lives there year round so many are put up for rent. Probably 1/3, or 200 are never rented out, their owner(s) don’t want anyone else in their villa. Typically these folks live on the west coast of America and get great airline rates for quick get-a-ways many times during the year.
If it’s just the two of you then the Studio or 1 Bedroom are fine. Believe it or not you can rent 1 Bedrooms for less than a Studio; view of the ocean makes all the difference.

- Partial Ocean View
- Ocean View
- Ocean Front
- Beach Front
Mountain View
This view faces the Maui mountains behind the Honua Kai which are fantastic. Many days you can see rainbows over the mountains. There are roads and parking lots in this view too, sadly. If you get a high enough villa the parking lots and roads are below your view and as you sit in the villa you won’t notice them.
Mountain view is the least expensive view at the Honua Kai – you can’t see the ocean from your villa. To some folks this is a big deal and to others the savings they get are applied to all the activities on Maui. If you’ve never been to Maui I suggest renting a villa with a view of the ocean. If you’ve been to Maui before then save money with this view!
Resort View
Green lawns and views of nearby buildings define this view. The Honua Kai towers are very beautiful and looking at a tower or other buildings near by is not an unpleasant experience. You can’t see the ocean and you probably can see part of the mountains behind the Honua Kai.
Partial Ocean View
This view allows you to see the ocean, not the entire shoreline but parts of the shoreline. Many of these views allow you to sit on your lanai and watch the Maui sunset each night. This is probably the most popular view at the Honua Kai, you see the ocean but don’t pay for ocean front.
Ocean Front
This view means your villa’s lanai faces the ocean. It does NOT mean you are at the end of the tower just feet from the ocean, just that you face towards the ocean. You don’t get a 180 degree view of the shoreline but a part of it. Many of the most expensive villas have ocean front views.
Beach Front
This view is only available to 3-bedroom villas at the end of both towers, right next to the beach. This view is 180 degree of the shoreline and you can throw a ball into the ocean from your lanai. If money is no object this is the view you want.
