Who doesn’t want fast and courteous service at a restaurant?  Well Nick’s Fishmarket of Maui has been awarded that distinction for 2009!  This fine restaurant is located in south Maui in Wailea – we have been there and the service and food and location are just fantastic.

Each table of this two-time Best Service winner in The Maui News utilizes the concept of “team service” where every table gets a captain, front waiter,
back waiter and busser to attend to their every need. All the floor staff start as kitchen stockers and must complete intensive practical training and written testing before being promoted to the next level.

Nick’s is just south of the Wailea Shopping Village and about a 45 minute drive south from the Honua Kai.

Located in the historic Lahaina Inn in Lahaina this restaurant has won almost two decades of awards for their fine restaurant and food.  The HONOLULU MAGAZINE readers’ poll for 2009 voted it the best Maui restaurant in fact, and for 16 years in a row!

The Lahaina Grill is a 12 minute drive from the Honua Kai and reservations are a must.  Around the holidays call a month or two in advance!  We have eaten at this fine restaurant many times and it is fantastic!

The Maalaea Waterfront Restaurant

Even though each villa at the Honua Kai has a full kitchen we eat out just about every night while at the Honua Kai.  Luckily there are dozens and dozens of excellent restaurants just a 5 to 10 minute car ride from the Honua Kai.  ALL dining in Maui is casual where the gentlemen and kids can wear an Aloha shirt, shorts, and sandals; the ladies always seem to out dress us guys anywhere.

Reservations are a must and for special days, like New Years Eve you must make the reservations months in advance – don’t say you weren’t warned.

Dukes Beach House is a fantastic restaurant, ocean front, right on the Honua Kai Resort & Spa’s property.  You’ve got to watch the setting Maui sun, with an adult beverage in hand, as many times as you can while on Maui.  Once you go back home that Maui sun is but a picture that you brag about to your friends.

So mosey down to Duke’s each night, order a new drink each night, and watch the setting sun and look for the “green flash“.  If you see one please post a comment here.  You will bump into folks who have seen it while on Maui – so far we have not.  (Looking directly into the non-setting sun is not a wise thing to do and is not advised here: a word from my lawyers)

Roy’s is just fantastic – for the entire family.  There are two Roy’s on Maui, one in the northern part of Maui, by us, and one in the south in Kihei.  Mom and dad can order fish and the kids have an entire menu to choose from.  To be honest the one in the northern part of Maui it is NOT on the beach but on the second story of a shopping center.

Kimo’s is located on Front St in Lahaina – it’s always packed to the rafters with folks looking for a fantastic meal while in Lahaina – make reservations!  You sit right next to the ocean and the view of Lahaina harbor is just fantastic.  Food is the best – you will have an excellent lunch or dinner.  You can park in the public parking areas and stroll along Front Street on your way to Kimo’s.

The same folks that own Kimo’s (T.S. Restaurants) own the Hula Grill in Whaler’s Village.  These folks know Maui and you will not be disappointed in either location.  The Hula Pie is their signature dissert – you will thank me later!

You know you can’t go wrong with Ruth’s Chris – there are two of them on Maui – on in Lahaina and one in Wailea.  We once had 4^th of July Dinner at
Ruth’s Chris as the fireworks started in Lahaina Harbor – a cruise ship came in and it was a night to remember.  Best steaks on Maui by far.  For some of you who visit Ruth’s Chris all the time you probably will want to visit another fine restaurant.

You see the Lahaina Harbor from your table and it’s fun to watch all the boats/ships in the harbor.  Ruth’s Chris is right next to Warren and Annabelle’s Magic Show and makes a wonderful evening of dining and then the magic show.

In Whalers Village Ka'anapali

Located in Whalers Village in Ka’anapali the Hula Grill offers 5-star dining just steps from the Ka’anapali Beach.  The servers at the Hula Grill can recommend the catch of the day, how it’s prepared, and a fine bottle of wine to complement the meal.  Kids will love the items on the menu for them.

Located on the ocean on Front Street in Lahaina Pacific’O is a great restaurant that we frequent on each visit to Maui.  They have a patio where you can be over the ocean or more secluded within the restaurant.  The views of Lahaina Harbor are great as are the many dishes for the entire family.

This should be enough to get you going – there are so many world-class restaurants on Maui that I’ll write many follow-up articles.

Beach Access Parking Lots:

This is the true hidden gem of FREE parking in Maui – look for the blue and white signs; some are round and some are square.  Maui demands that the when resorts are built beach access roads and parking lots be built for free and given to Maui before building permits are issued.  So around EVERY large resort you will see the blue and white access signs.  Unless you know what to look for you will overlook them.  Parking is free and unlimited.  Locals construction workers like to park there during the day but at 4 PM they clear out.

North of the Honua Kai there is a HUGE beach access that we owners paid for with higher purchase price from the building permits that demanded about 10 acres of free parks and parking.  Well folks dining at Duke’s park in the lot and don’t have to pay Honua Kai a penny in parking – why not.

Whalers’ Village:

You can get 3 hours of FREE parking by parking at the paid parking lot and spending at least $15 at some of the shops in Whalers’ Village.  The ABC store is a minimum of $15 but each store has its own minimum – find out before you buy at a store.
TRULY FREE PARKING @ WHALERS VILLAGE, On a Space Available Basis
In addition to the Whalers Village pay garage described above, there is another, little known “Beach Access” parking lot, located about 50 yards south of the Village (towards Lahaina); it is actually a long, narrow area squeezed in between the Village and the Westin Hotel. It is identified by a small, rather nondescript, blue sign for “Beach Access,” and is intended for persons wanting to visit Kaanapali Beach for “recreational purposes” (swimming, boating, hiking, visiting sacred sites…”). There are about 47 parking spots here, each specifically labeled “Beach Access,” and SCATTERED throughout this long, strip lot (containing about 100+ total spaces), which runs perpendicular to the ocean.

There are two caveats, however: (1) There are an even larger number of parking spaces which are for private or commercial use, and vehicles will be towed for violating their use; and (2) the 47 “Beach Access” spaces supposedly “go quick” most mornings, although turnover may be much greater in the afternoons and evenings. My personal belief is that most of these spots are being illegally used by workers and commercial vehicles at the Village (without any enforcement against their use); I suspect that there is actually very little “turnover” among these spaces.

This space is available seven days a week, and offers an inexpensive way to visit Kaanapali Beach all day long, particularly if you arrive early. Weekend use by local residents is believed to make this space even scarcer. There is no time limit, but overnight parking is NOT allowed. NOTE: Technically, evening visitors to the Village do not meet the “recreational purposes” definition for this parking area, but this rule is apparently not enforced.

MORE TRULY FREE, “BEACH ACCESS” PARKING LOTS, as available
There are 5 hotel parking lots, located directly alongside the ocean side of Kaanapali Parkway, all of which have a FEW FREE parking spaces, on a very limited basis. Each can be identified from the Parkway by small, blue and white signs labeled either “Shoreline Access,” or “Parking – Beach Users Only.” Each free lot is physically separate from the main parking lot of each associated hotel. Open spaces are reportedly difficult to actually obtain, with most being taken early in the AM. Turnover does occur, and is believed to be much greater in the afternoons and evenings: You just have to get lucky!

Free parking spaces may be found at the following lots:
Sheraton Maui (inside the ground floor corner of the main, pay Sheraton concrete garage, this physically separate garage entrance is at the SOUTH border of the Sheraton property and contains 21 spaces).

Kaanapali Beach Hotel (mostly low rise buildings, just south of the Sheraton), has 10 spaces and are reached by entering the main driveway to the lobby: the spaces are to the right of the lobby, at the northern corner of the lot…and clearly labeled “Beach Parking Only.”

Kaanapali Alii (located between the Kaanapali Alii condominiums and the Marriott), and totally separate from the main Alii parking lot; this tiny lot has a mere 10 parking spaces; a white-and-black sign INSIDE the lot says “Beach Parking Only.”

Maui Marriott (located within the entrance to the main Marriott lot, but just outside of a large concrete garage; contains just 10 spaces)

Hyatt Hotel (located at the south border of the Hyatt, sharing a large parking lot mainly intended for some Hyatt guests and service vehicles; this area offers most of two rows of 23 public parking spaces. This is reached via a long “service road” between the Hyatt and the golf course; one helpful HINT is to follow the sign that reads “Luau Parking.” There are blue and white signs INSIDE the lot which read “Beach Access Parking,” and specific spaces are so labeled on the pavement. [This area is deceptively hidden, but is a large lot to the south of all the Hyatt buildings.] The Hyatt is located at the southernmost border of Kaanapali Beach, making this lot the furthest distance from Whalers Village: It’s about a 15-20 minute walk.

A seemingly good strategy for finding FREE parking would be to drive directly to the Sheraton (follow the Kaanapali Parkway to the most northerly hotel (the Sheraton), and check to see if space exists inside its covered SOUTH corner of the lot. Continue driving South from there, checking at the large lot between the Village and the Westin Hotel, try your luck at the tiny lots near the Kaanapali Alii and Marriott, and finish by looking in the hard-to-find Hyatt lot. If you decide to pay, the Kaanapali Beach Hotel has the least expensive parking = $10/day.

ALTERNATIVE FREE PARKING, ONE MILE FROM WHALERS VILLAGE, is an easy stroll along a beautiful beach and resort parkway:
Visitors who enjoy walking (and free parking) should consider parking at Kahekili Beach County Park (totally free, and LOTS of space…perhaps for 100+ cars). This park is NORTH of Whalers Village, and located at the very southern edge of the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas; it is about a 25 minute walk to reach Whalers Village…and you will enjoy every minute getting there and back.

If you are primarily interested in just “walking ALONG the beach,” starting at Kahekili Park is an easy and beautiful PAVED stroll along the shore, thru 2 attractive hotel properties (the Royal Lahaina, and Maui Kaanapali Villas, both of which welcome walkabout visitors), and stretching around (and thru) the Sheraton Hotel…and then along the paved Kaanapali Beachwalk leading to the Village…and even beyond to the Hyatt. It’s an easy and gorgeous walk alongside the ocean and the beach, borders a lush golf course and lots of swaying palm trees, and passes seven major resort properties…all with gorgeous grounds, fancy lobbies, and pools for your viewing: IT’S ALL GOOD

Hey, if you plan on walking a lot anyway, it doesn’t make any difference if you start at the free Kahekili Park or at any of the Kaanapali parking lots, IF you are going to be walking between both areas. You can easily make a full day of beach enjoyment by parking at Kahekili, strolling one mile to Whalers Village, and taking your time to visit all 7 major resort properties, lobbies, lush vegetation, and elaborate grounds. There is also excellent swimming at Kahekili Beach Park, which is adjacent to a spectacularly beautiful beach that stretches for about one-half mile to the northern edge of Sheraton @ Black Rock. This beach is actually just as pretty as the famed Kaanapali Beach that is south of the Sheraton…and is never crowded or even “busy.”

Just to put this walk into perspective: Timeshare owners and guests at the popular Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort Villas consider themselves very fortunate to be located on this long stretch of beach that borders their resort and Kahekili Park. Many of these folks stroll and jog this walkway to Whalers Village and beyond EVERY day! [To be completely truthful, there are probably more of them that ride the free shuttle between their Villas and the Westin Hotel, which is adjacent to the Village!]

Honua Kai Cafe Late Check-Out Kit

If you live in the Mid-West or the East coast your plane leaves Maui at 9 PM or later and you checked out at 11 AM that morning from your villa.  What do you do during that time?  Well here’s some ideas that might help you.

• My renters can stay until midnight if there is no renter checking in at 4 PM that day – you might ask your rental agent to do the same thing
• Your parking sticker, at the Honua Kai, simply states your check out day – that $10/day you paid is for 24 hrs of parking a day.  So move your packed bags to your car and leave it in the underground garage until you leave for the airport
• The Honua Kai issues wrist bands for the last day of your visit – go down to the pool shack and get wrist bands for your family before 11 AM
• Rent a Gazebo for $45 for the day or $35 from noon onward.  Your family now has a super location for a day of fun
• Have a day of fun in the ocean or at the pool and then use our “Late check out kit” to clean up
• Make reservations at Duke’s for 5 PM (do this a couple of days in advance) and have a full tummy as you head for the airport
• Leave for the airport 3 hours before your flight takes off

Cleaning up

Before having dinner at Duke’s, your family will have to clean up.  North of the Honua Kai is a public park with beach access that the Honua Kai paid for.  Owners like me paid millions of dollars to deed the land to Maui and build a fantastic restroom with outside showers – I here by give you permission to use the showers and restrooms to clean up.

Honua Kai Cafe Late Check-Out Kit Parts

Simply take out our “Late check out kit” and head for the showers.  Inside the kit is a bar of soap and shampoo to use at the shower – keep your swimming suit on and shower up.  I see Maui locals doing this after a day at the beach so no one will think it odd that you clean up.  Hey, that local’s house is probably worth more than yours so if it’s good enough for them it’s good enough for you.  Then use the restroom to change into your cloths for your flight home and put your wet bathing suit and damp towels into the zip bag and put it into your car in the underground parking lot at the Honua Kai.

That’s it – have dinner at Duke’s and head for the airport.

Late Check Out Kit

We built this kit and use it – even as owners at the Honua Kai!  (Assuming there is a renter checking in at 4 PM that day).  All the parts can be bought from Wal-Mart and cost just a few bucks and can be recycled for use on other vacations.

What makes this kit work is the heavy duty 10-gallon plastic zip bag – not the zip lock bags in the kitchen section at Wal-Mart but sold in the ironing section at Wal-Mart.  This bag has a huge plastic zipper with a plastic guide and is waterproof.  Once you place the parts for the kit inside of it and zip it close there is a white valve that allows a vacuum cleaner hose to suck the air out of the bag.  That vacuum squeezes the towels together and holds everything in a tight package that won’t rattle around.

List of parts (From Wal-Mart):

• 1 -medium size Zip bag – by the irons and ironing boards
• 2-thin Towels – use during the day at the pool/ocean and then to dry after shower
• 1-bar soap
• 1-shampoo
• 1-comb
• 1-mini-hair dryer
• 1-toothbrush
• 1-tooth paste
• 1-deodorant

Place the above list of parts in zip bag and hook to vacuum cleaner hose to remove air and squash everything into a thin package.  When packing, the morning of departure, take out the Late Check-Out Kit and have ready.

After changing cloths, put the wet towels and swimming suite in the zip bag which will keep them from other cloths.

Of course this isn’t needed if you add a day to your initial reservation, then you can shower and change in 5-star comfort.  But that’s expensive and sometimes can’t be done because of scheduling conflicts with the next renter into your villa.

In January 2009, Honua Kai opened the Hokulani building with an initial 318 guest suites, `Aina Gourmet Market, pool, fitness center, concierge desk, Family Fun Club and pool & beach activities operation. Future plans for the new Konea building include opening of a third restaurant and the addition of a spa partner, both scheduled for 2010.

The Resort’s popular 50% Off Special will continue through January 31, 2010, excluding blackout dates of December 13, 2009 through January 2, 2010, based upon double occupancy in Ohana and one-bedroom, and up to four in two-bedroom category. The 50% Off Special rates start at $200 per night for the Ohana Resort View category and 50 percent off published rack rates in Ohana, one- and two-bedroom suite categories, based on availability.

Winter Special 2010 includes 7th night free and 15% off rates when booking a minimum of seven nights at published rates in Ohana, one- and two-bedroom suite categories, based upon availability. The Winter Special 2010 rates start at $340 per night for Ohana Resort View category and are valid February 1 through April 10, 2010.

The Honua Kai Resort & Spa is a 5-minute walk north

Our 1-bedroom villa at the Honua Kai Resort & Spa is just a 5-minute walk north of WKORV and WKORVN.  I can see WKORVN and WKORV from our lanai.

Your 1-bedroom is 960 sq ft and ours is 700 sq ft, not comparing their size, but I’m suggesting that our 1-bedroom would be a great way to extend your vacation at WKORV.  Or, if you have friends/relatives and can’t get an II exchange for another villa consider our 1-bedroom!

OK, so the 2 900 sq ft meeting convention rooms would be nothing for Vegas but on Ka’anapali Beach they mean 50 folks can hold a convention in paradise – per room.

It costs $500 to rent each room for an entire day and $250 for half a day.  In reality each convention room seats 25 people comfortably.  Like most convention resorts you get a price break when you book more villas.  If you have an interest in holding a meeting or convention at the Honua Kai I would call the Honua Kai and ask for the Director of Owner Relations for availability and pricing.  The phone number for the Honua Kai Resort & Spa is 808-662-2801.

Meals can be catered from the 2 fine restaurants at the Honua Kai – The Aina Restaurant and Duke’s Restaurant would be glad to cater the meals and drinks.
