Energy Conservation at the Honua Kai
This Makes Lots of Cent$

Did you know that ALL the electricity consumed on Maui comes from diesel powered generators located in the middle of Maui? Diesel – you can’t get more expensive electricity than diesel!
The Honua Kai received Maui Electric Company’s largest ever rebate for energy savings – largest! How did the Honua Kai do it?
- The swimming pools are heated from the cooling water from the air conditioning system! Normally that heat is lost into the air
- The restrooms located near the ocean are powered by solar panels
- Honua Kai has a huge compactor which compresses garbage for removal – it is powered by soy oil and solar power
- All the BOSCH appliances in each of the 600 villas have the highest energy efficiency ratings possible
- When the sliding glass panel doors are opened to let in Maui sunshine into a villa the A/C system shuts off and saves a lot of electricity
- Compact fluorescent light bulbs are used wherever possible – instead of only converting 3% of the electricity into light, as with a standard bulb, 90% of the electricity is converted to light with fluorescent bulbs
Recycling
Just about everything used on Maui must be imported from somewhere! Recycling takes on a whole new meaning in Maui. Landfills consume scarce land that could be used for something else. The Honua Kai has established a recycling program that incorporates employees, guests and the resort itself. ,Here are some of the highlights of the Honua Kai recycling program:
- Recycling centers are located everywhere throughout the resort – the guest floors, public areas, employee areas, anywhere trash is generated a recycling program can be found
- Honua Kai uses Aloha Waste to recycle aluminum, glass, plastic, green waste and paper
- Biodegradable trash bags are used throughout the resort
- Each guest floor also has a designated chute for trash, as well as a recycling center. This allows for guest participation. The “donations” go to the Resort Recycling Center where the trash is separated for recycling
- The beach walk planks fronting the Resort, are made from 50-percent recycled and reclaimed plastic and 50-percent reclaimed wood. Using these materials significantly reduces landfill impact
Green Clean
Guests of the Honua Kai can easily participate in Honua Kai’s environmental stewardship efforts; there is a placard in each villa that explains why bed linens are changed every third day, and towels are changed upon guest request; all to participate in making Maui green.
